From Crisis to Care: A Policy Forum on Maternal Mental Health

Maternal mental health is essential to the well-being of birthing people, their children, and families—yet it has too often been overlooked in our health care systems. ITUP recently hosted a critical discussion on the urgent need to prioritize maternal mental health in California and beyond.

This virtual event highlighted promising policy innovations, community-led approaches, and systems-level strategies aimed at addressing maternal mental health disparities, particularly in historically marginalized communities. Leaders in public health, behavioral health, and maternal advocacy shared insights, real-world experiences, and opportunities to build a more equitable and supportive maternal mental health system.

The event agenda featured:

✔ In-depth exploration of the connection between maternal mental health and overall maternal and child health outcomes
✔ Expert perspectives on integrating mental health support into maternal care
✔ Firsthand experiences from individuals and providers navigating mental health challenges during the perinatal period
✔ Actionable insights to support advocacy for stronger maternal mental health policies and programs

Together, we explored ways to build stronger systems of care for birthing people and families across California.
