Honoring Three Decades of Impact

After three transformative decades championing health care access and equity across California, we say farewell.

Our hope is that ITUP’s impact will endure far beyond our organizational closure. For nearly 30 years, we have proudly offered our research, publications, and convening platforms at no cost to stakeholders, a commitment to accessibility that reflects our core values but presents challenges in today’s funding and political environment.

Over the last three decades, ITUP:

  • Hosted 29 annual conferences; ITUP conferences were a “big tent” inclusive of diverse audiences that highlighted statewide updates and programming focused on existing and emerging health policy issues.
  • Served as a “source of truth” that delivered hundreds of publications that were timely, non-partisan, and insightful. Our regional factsheets not only provided stakeholders with updated insurance profiles for their communities, which help them understand the magnitude of the uninsured population but also supported their fundraising efforts to support these communities.
  • Built a network of over 5,000 stakeholders, including elected and appointed officials, health care leaders, health care workers, community advocates, public health students, and many, many others.
  • Convened 11 Regional Health Equity Collaboratives annually to provide statewide policy updates, share localized data and understand local challenges and opportunities.
  • Served as a conduit between state and community leaders. We served as intermediary between state regulators and policymakers and community stakeholders to share implementation feedback.

California’s remarkable progress in health care access, from dramatic reductions in the uninsured rate to groundbreaking innovations in Medi-Cal delivery, stands as testament to the collaborative ecosystem ITUP helped build. We’ve convened diverse voices, translated complex policies, and centered on the experiences of underserved communities, helping California as a national leader in health care reform.

In our final chapter, we delivered high-impact policy resources and are in the process of transforming our website into a comprehensive digital archive that ensures our work continues to inform and inspire future generations of health care advocates and policymakers. We are also working on a final capstone document that reflects the impact of ITUP on coverage in California. Be on the lookout, as it will be shared in late Fall 2025.

To our funders, policy partners, community leaders, and the countless Californians who stood with us: your commitment made this journey possible. Together, we’ve built a foundation for health care equity that will continue to strengthen California’s health care system for years to come. We are hopeful that California’s legacy of coverage and our collective resistance to current political dynamics will continue to be heard across the nation.

With Gratitude,
The ITUP Team and Board of Directors
