In a response to customers having difficulty paying their first month’s premium in time, Covered California recently announced that customers who signed up for plans in 2013 can pay their bills through January 15.
Payments must be received, not postmarked, by insurance companies by the 15th for coverage to become active. If bills are paid by January 15, then services will be retroactively covered to January 1. After the first premium is paid, coverage will become active and consumers will receive membership ID cards.
The previous deadline of January 6 posed a challenge to Covered California, insurance carriers, and consumers to get applications processed, invoices mailed, and bills paid in just two weeks between the application and payment deadlines.
Customers who have enrolled in coverage should call their health insurance plans directly with questions or to make payments. A contact sheet for all of the plans can be found here. Some plans may allow online or in person payment in addition to payment by mail or over the phone.
